Dugald was born in Callander in 1943 - during the war his
parents had evacuated from Glasgow via Strathyre and finally
settled in Callander. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone
College of Art, and went on to study at Glasgow School of
Art. Dugald then went to work as a Production Designer,
designing sets for various drama and light entertainment
shows, and working closely with the designer on each set
to set an overall mood or find a perfect location. He started
with BBC Scotland with an Industrial Scholarship award from
Glasgow Art School then decided to take off to New Zealand
where he worked for several years with South Pacific TV
in Christchurch and as a Design Manager in Auckland. After
a year or two Duglald returned to the UK working in London,
Manchester and Cardiff before returning to Glasgow with
the BBC. He started working free - lance whilst trying to
paint at the same time, and as he found this increasdingly
difficult, began painting full time in 1998.His influences
are still firmly rooted in the Scottish landscape - a lot
of his childhood holidays were spent in Knapdale, Argyll,
and as a student at Dundee he spent time exploring the East
coast. This love of the land and sea still informs his work
today.
