Terence McCrossan was born in 1958 in the small mining community of Bellsbank in south west Ayrshire. The house in
which he was born was situated high up on the east bank of the valley of the river Doon. The views then as now are spectacular,
rugged hills, dark woods, deep cold lochs and cascading mountain streams. As a child this beautiful landscape became a
boundless playground. But it could also be frightening, in every loch and river pool there had been a drowning, every ruin had its ghost and the weather could be as severe as that of the Highlands. The Roman road, Loch Doon castle, drovers trails, the
building of the dam, mining disasters. For a small isolated community which had only one shop and a school it was steeped
in a rich history giving the people a real sense of self and a remarkable confidence
It was growing up here which instilled in Terry a life long love and respect for the Land. This is abundantly evident now in his paintings. Terry has been painting for over twenty years, exhibiting for the first time at the age of nineteen at the MacLaurin Gallery in Ayr. His painting has matured and developed into a distinctivly expressive and vibrant style. All of the landscapes are produced from memory without preparatory drawings or any photographic reference. It's not that he has anything against this method of working it's just that , with the familiar subject of landscape he preferes to be totally intuitive.
Terry is now living and working in Fife, where there is a great diversity of landscape to inspire him, from the Ochil hills to the rich farmland of the lowlands. He exhibits both painting and sculpture across Scotland.
