Robert
was born in Glasgow in 1949, and studied at Glasgow School
of Art between 1966 and 1970, studying painting under David
Donaldson, Alexander Goudie and James Robertson. A career
in art education followed, until he turned to painting full
time in 1995. Robert has exhibited widely in all the major
annual exhibitions such as the RGI, RSW, ROI and PAI –
indeed he was awarded the Diploma of Artistic Excellence of
the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) in 1998. He has served as
an artist member on the councils of the Glasgow Art Club and
the Paisley Art Institute. Over the last few years, Robert
has established a reputation for his lively and fluid style
of painting, concentrating often on one of his favourite subjects
– the wide sweeping beach landscapes of the Western
Isles. However, Robert does often paint landscapes from Italy,
Spain and Cornwall, as well as richly hued still lifes. With
his distinctively sweeping brushstrokes and light-filled palette,
Robert perfectly captures the mood, light and climate particular
to each of these locations. Painting on location inspires
him greatly – “I like the idea that I might actually
sit on the same rock to paint a picture that Peploe or Cadell
had chosen to sit on during one of their painting trips to
the Islands. I love the loneliness and serenity to be found
at these locations, in the vastness of the space or the remoteness
of the place.”
