Born in Ayr and raised on the East Coast of Fife, John graduated in Architecture from Glasgow’s Mackintosh School of Architecture in the early Nineties. Painting has been a lifelong pleasure and John exhibits his work widely in galleries throughout the UK.
The Ayrshire coast near his home in Troon, with its expansive shoreline and the ever changing weather provides an unlimited source of inspiration for John. He is interested in the quality of light and colour in the Scottish landscape, particularly the sky, which often dominates his paintings.
Working in oils, John applies the paint with deft, expressive brushstrokes in a natural palette. His work has an effortless sense of balance and depth due in no small part to his inherent Architectural acumen. These precise underpinnings to his work allow John to fully embrace the colour and movement in his scenes, celebrating the unpredictable beauty of light falling on land and sea.
