Lesley Clarke
St Ives born Lesley Clarke is a largely self taught artist. She states that she quickly became enamoured with glass as a medium. This was after observing her husband, prominent glass artist Norman Stuart Clarke, at work. Following this, she decided to ‘have a few goes’ herself. From then on she dedicated her time to perfecting her own process and technique. She states that it suits her personality as it combines heat with spontaneity and the importance of the moment.
Lesley uses two coloured glasses in a powdered form. Blue and white glass is rolled into the hot crystal and the oxides of the coloured glass react to produce ochre tones. The colours then mix and swirl, imbuing her work with the tones of the surrounding land and seascapes before being shaped into forms that further reflect the kinetic relationship between the two.
