Maryann graduated in Printed Textiles from Manchester in 1985 and then went on to have a successful career as a Textile Designer, exhibiting in New York and North America and designing work for multiple brands and clients internationally. She later turned her attention to painting, eventually settling in Scotland where she lives and works today.
Maryann’s inspirations come primarily from the landscape around her, with recognisable Scottish locales filtered through kaleidoscopic bursts of colour rendered in her unique abstract expressionist style.
Although oil on canvas is Maryann’s preferred medium, she has a passion for experimentation with the surfaces of her paintings often showing signs of mark-making, adding further layers of texture and depth to her compositions. She has also started experimenting with oil monoprinting, with expressive linework and simplified palettes adding a further layer of gauzy vibrancy to her work.
