Louis Sinclair McNally, originally from Inverkip, Renfrewshire, attended Gray’s School of Art in the mid-Eighties. He currently resides in East Lothian.
Finding inspiration in the East Coast countryside and the Gothic majesty of Edinburgh, Louis’ works act as interpretations of the environments that we traverse on a day to day basis. He strips away evidence of the hustle and bustle of daily life. This allows him to explore the distinctive character and grandeur of any given place.
Often painting with oil on robust wooden panels, Louis has a painstakingly detailed approach. He creates paintings that are carefully composed and painted over many weeks. He often references his own drawings, photographs and memories. The resulting works can feel both unsettling and reassuring. And at the same time; in shining an atmospheric light on familiar locales, they invite us to fully appreciate the essential tranquillity of the spaces we inhabit.
