Born in Glasgow in 1967, Ruth completed her BA in Art at Edinburgh College of Art in 2010 and continues to live in the city. Prior to graduation she won the Andrew Grant Travel Award in 2007 and 2009. In 2011 she was awarded the Bessie Scott Award, Paisley Art Institute, in 2012 the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art Exhibition Award and in 2013 the Tony and Maureen Toft Prize, at the Scottish Society of Artists Open Exhibition. Ruth was selected for the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries Exhibition in 2011
Since then Ruth has shown regularly in private galleries alongside the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Royal Scottish Watercolour Society and Paisley Art Institute. Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections, including the Scottish Parliament.
Ruth’s work is evocative and immersive; her soft and flowing acrylic washes create sky, field and sea, and are contrasted with more direct and linear mark making which leads the viewer in to each scene. Working on a variety of scales, from tiny to gargantuan, each painting speaks beautifully of the character of its subject.
