The Bridge Series III

Scottish artist Robert McAulay lives and works in his home city of Glasgow. Largely self taught Robert trained as an upholsterer before attending art college in the mid 80s. Since then he has exhibited widely, both here in the UK and internationally.

Robert’s paintings are as much about the process of painting as they are about their subject matter; it is the physical act of painting itself, and exploring new mediums and techniques that draws him back to the studio time and time again. In each of his paintings there is a sense of balance – of colour, texture and composition.

Often working in series to explore different subject matter makes Robert’s output wide and varied. Running through all of his work is an interest in the environment around him – the urban character of his city, but also its immediate proximity to nature and the Cathkin Braes.

Nature has always been an escape for Robert but it is not so much nature as a desolate and unpeopled land. The nature that features in Robert’s paintings appears as a lived environment, and we either see people in the landscape and within the trees, or we have a sense of them not being far.
