We are delighted to present this beautiful exhibition of landscape and still life paintings by Andy Cross, showcasing his distinctive handling of line and colour and his considered observations of nature. Each painting quietly celebrates the natural world; whether exploring the changing seasonal light on a landscape or the rich tones of a domestic still life, subjects spring to life on the canvas. Andy’s brush seems to dance; never still for long, large gestural brushstrokes create atmosphere filled skies, thin suggestions of line delineate sky from land, and a final flick of the brush tells us all we need to know about the wildflower.
Born in Hamilton, Andy graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing. After pursuing a career in teaching Andy decided to devote his time to painting full-time. Most of Andy’s inspiration comes from the surrounding countryside of his home in South Lanarkshire as well as his frequent sojourns to France. From damp, stormy Scottish weather to the sunlit vistas of Provence, Andy evokes atmosphere, and the unique light and weather conditions in each of his landscape paintings.
The living legacy of Joan Eardley can be felt in Andy Cross’s paintings. An artist loved by many contemporary Scottish landscape painters and of huge inspiration to Andy, we see echoes of her palette and compositional choices. Our exhibition coincides with a new exhibition celebrating Joan Eardley’s work at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
