With a background in Archaeology, Andy has been exploring the landscapes of Scotland for over two decades. This love of the natural environment has filtered directly into his artworks, which depict the varied landscapes of Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Borders.
Andy’s primary inspiration is the spontaneity of nature and the scenes he creates are his direct response to this symbiotic interplay between the landscape and the elements.
Painting rapidly in situ, Andy will lay his canvas on the ground or shore, incorporating natural elements such as sand, earth, clay and greenery into his work alongside acrylics so his composition almost becomes fused with the landscape itself. He then ‘excavates’ the canvas and returns to his studio where he begins scraping away at the surface with pencils to create a fully realised piece of elemental abstraction.
