Antonio Lopez Reche
Antonio Lopez Reche
Over the past twenty-five years, Antonio Lopez Reche has developed a distinctive body of figurative sculpture, which weave his own everyday experiences – memorable and inconsequential – into the larger narrative frameworks of myth and fable.
Ideas develop at their own pace. Some arrive with an immediate force, while others linger beneath the surface, gradually taking shape until, often unexpectedly, they find their form. This instinctive approach continues into Antonio’s making process. Mainly working without preliminary maquettes or sketches, he models directly and intuitively, allowing each sculpture to evolve through the handling of the material.
Movement, strength and surface are central to Antonio’s work. He is particularly interested in preserving in bronze the raw qualities of clay, wax and plaster, together with the expressive marks left by his tools and the energy of loose modelling. The most rewarding stage is often one of uncertainty, when an initial feeling or indistinct idea gradually materialises through form and texture.
Working from his studio in South East London, Antonio produces sculpture for galleries and private clients, ranging from intimate works to large-scale and site-specific commissions. His work can be found in collections throughout the UK and Europe, as well as in the United States and Hong Kong.
