BETH ROBERTSON FIDDES
There is a restless quiet in the landscapes of Beth Robertson Fiddes. Beneath the apparent stillness of water and the enduring presence of rock lies a world in constant motion, shaped by tides, currents, shifting light and the relentless forces of nature. Beth’s paintings explore this tension between movement and stillness, turbulence and tranquillity, capturing the moments within a landscape that are continually changing.

Drawing inspiration from the coastal and inland waters of the West Highlands and Islands, Beth’s work is deeply rooted in her experience of these places. Childhood memories of Tiree, its wild weather, rock pools and ancient folklore, continue to inform her understanding of the landscape as somewhere both familiar and mysterious. Water becomes more than a subject: it is a powerful and elusive presence, carrying echoes of memory, time and the unseen.
Her painting process reflects the restless nature of the landscape itself. Through successive layers of paint and paper, surfaces are built up, washed away, scraped and reworked, allowing each painting to evolve through a process of discovery. There is a sense of both immediacy and permanence in the finished works, as moments of extraordinary energy are suspended in time.
This exhibition explores the paradox at the heart of Beth’s paintings: the possibility of finding stillness within movement, silence within turbulence, and a profound sense of peace in the untamed forces of the natural world.
